ABOUT
It was 2001, in Bhawani Kunj—an unauthorized colony tucked behind D-2, Vasant Kunj. Play schools for privileged children were plenty, but what about the children of daily wage workers, domestic helpers, and laborers? Their needs were greater, yet opportunities were scarce.
One afternoon, in the office of The Wonder Years, the play school we had started, a laborer walked in with his three- or four-year-old son, his eyes filled with hope. He wanted admission for his child.
Savita and I looked at each other. What? Wasn’t this child just like the others? Didn’t his parents, like all parents, dream of a safe and nurturing space for him? Yet, as a private school, we had a set clientele. How could we accommodate this child without defying the norms of a business venture?
But something in us refused to say no.
The mason worked at the nearby DDA Type-4 construction site, building homes for others while his own child’s future remained uncertain. His presence forced us to reflect—was education only for those who could afford it?
Then, the idea struck.
The space, the resources, and the willingness were all there. Why not use the same classrooms and materials after lunch for children who had nowhere else to learn?
That was the moment Disha was born—a small yet powerful step toward inclusion. And as if fate had aligned itself with our mission, our kind-hearted neighbor, Mrs. Leela Hari Haran, stepped forward as the first volunteer teacher.
What followed was nothing short of magical. The classrooms that once fell silent in the afternoon now buzzed with laughter, curiosity, and a hunger to learn.
The spark caught on. What began as an experiment became a movement—blissful moments to cherish, a purpose greater than ourselves.
That tiny seed has today grown into Nai Disha, still rooted in the same belief: every child deserves a chance, a space, a future.
